Story Arcs[]
Lullaby Arc[]
Gray first appears in the series when Lucy joins Fairy Tail and she starts getting introduced to each of the members, each one getting crazier and crazier as she goes. She meets Gray and her first encounter with him doesn't go over so well as his exhibitionist habits have not died down over the years and he has misplaced his pants. She also learns that Gray and Natsu have a long running rivalry and are constantly fighting.
Erza returns to the guild with news of a new mission and she needs some help with it. She tells Gray and Natsu to join her, and because both of them fear her they agree no questions asked. The team hunts down Eligor and his guild Eisenwald to stop them from using the flute Lullaby, a flute that plays music that is able to steal the souls of those who hear it. Gray believes that they are trying to use the town's broadcast center to play the music across the area. Making his way, to the broadcast center he discovers it was a trap, and is attacked by Rayule, who has the power to wrap people in shadows. Gray is enraged by the way that the guild has been acting and at their plans and uses his powers to freeze over Rayule and his shadows, telling him that Dark Guilds aren't the only guilds you should fear.
Gray and his team hunt down the remaining members of Eisenwald who are making their way to the Magic Council's meeting to destroy each member of it with the music. However when they arrive there they discover that the crisis has already been resolved and Eisenwald has now surrendered. But just then the flute comes to life itself and turns into its true form, that of a giant monster capable of crushing mountains. The beast expects to make short work of the mages, but Natsu, Erza, and Gray fight it together and destroy it quickly, proving to all that they truly are Fairy Tail's strongest team.
Galuna Island Arc[]
Natsu's team decides to take on their first S-Rank mission, despite Erza telling them not to. Gray decides he wants no part in it until Makarov says that only Laxus could bring him back. This enrages Gray and he heads off after Natsu and Lucy. They arrive on an island where everyone turns into monsters when the moon is out and they are asked to remove the curse that is causing this. Gray decides to help them out after this and they begin exploring the island, and while doing so they fall into a pit where Gray finds the demon Deliora frozen there. He explains to his friends about how this monster destroyed his village and how Ur used her Ice Shell spell to encase him.
They quickly find that Gray's old partner Lyon is trying to unseal Deliora in an attempt to defeat it once and for all and surpass their master. Gray tries to fight him but is so wrought with guild over Ur's death that he loses. The next morning after escaping the battle the team awakens to find Erza has come to bring them back. Gray tries to tell her of the severity of this situation, but she says she doesn't care, that this is not her mission and she will bring them home even if she has to cut them down to do it. Gray can't take it anymore and he grabs her sword with his bare hands, telling her that he doesn't care what she does to him, he is not leaving. He runs off to battle Lyon again and stop him, and the site of his rebellion causes Erza to change her mind and she decides to help.
Gray has a rematch with Lyon, but this time he explains to him that Ur is still alive as the ice encasing Deliora and if it melts then she will die. Lyon doesn't care, and after hearing this Gray no longer decides that he is going to fight to save his former partner, he is now going to fight to defeat him. Gray's well balanced Ice Make spells are able to defeat Lyon, however the Ice has already begun to melt. Gray is about to use the Ice Shell spell himself, but the demon dies as soon as he is freed as a result of being sealed away for so many years. After the battle Gray tells Lyon that he should really consider joining a guild, but Lyon refuses and decides to keep exploring the world to find stronger opponents to prove himself.
After returning from this mission, Gray and the rest of his team discovered that Fairy Tail had been attacked by the rival guild Phantom Lord. Along with his other Fairy Tail members they stormed Phantom Lord to get revenge but had to retreat when Makarov was defeated and needed instant medical attention.
While waiting to see what would happen to Makarov and as the guild tried to formulate a plan, the walking guild of Phantom Lord began to make its move and marched on Fairy Tail, aiming its giant cannon at Fairy Tail to destroy it. Erza defended the guild from the attack while Gray, Natsu, and Elfman snuck aboard Phantom Lord. Gray came face to face with Juvia, one of the Elemental 4, whose body was made completely of water.
Juvia instantly develops a crush on him, but when he says he will never hand Lucy over to Phantom Lord, she thinks it means he is in love with her and she goes into a rage. He freezes her over, but after realizing he accidentally groped her in the process, he lets her go. She tried to confess her love for him, but is too depressed by the rain that her own body is creating. He is able to defeat her and stops the rain in the process, making her see him with even more respect and admiration.
He goes on to fight Jose Porla, leader of Phantom Lord, along with Elfman and Erza, but Porla is too powerful and defeats them all quickly. However Makarov, fully recovered, comes back and saves them all. After the battle Gray works to rebuild Fairy Tail, and receives a mysterious boxed lunch from a secret admirer. He doesn't know this is from Juvia who is watching him from afar, so he gives it to Natsu.

After returning from the tower, Gray is surprised to see a newly built guild with added features. Upon entering it, he and the others learn that Juvia and Gajeel, to everyone's discontent and shock, joined Fairy Tail. Shortly after, Gray and Juvia embark on a mission assigned by Makarov. Once they return, Gray decides to enjoy the Harvest Festival and the Miss Fairy Tail Pageant which gets interrupted by Laxus and his bodyguards, the Raijinshuu.
With Laxus using the stoned girls in the Miss Fairy Tail Pageant as hostages to force everyone in the guild to participate in his fighting contest, Gray runs to the city to find him but is stopped by Bixlow. As the battle between the two ensue, Gray manages to destroy his puppets only to replaced with manikins from a clothing store. Bixlow then runs off to an alley with Gray trailing behind him where he traps the ice mage in a rune created by Fried. Unable to use his magic because of the enchantment, Gray decides to use brute force to bring him down, but is defeated by the attacks of Bixlow's puppets.
Later near the end of the arc, Gray uses Warren's telepathic magic to communicate to the injured Fairy Tail members and explain the current situation. After doing so, he and the rest of the guild use whatever remaining power they have to destroy Laxus' Thunder Palace, saving the town. But due to the Living Link magic placed on Laxus' spell, they were all struck with a lightning counterattack knocking most of them out. It was shown that Gray managed to destroy four Lacrima crystals, the second most after Erza who destroyed two hundred.
Following the events of the fighting festival, Gray and Juvia are seen on the same float, acting as the king and queen of an ice palace.
Oracion Seis Arc[]
With Oracion Seis, a dark guild and a member of the Balam Alliance, being active as of late, the legitimate guilds decide to create an alliance of their own to deal with them. Makarov chooses Gray and Team Natsu to represent Fairy Tail in this mission and upon reaching their destined meeting location, they join forces with the members of the guilds Lamia Scale, Cait Shelter and Blue Pegasus. To Gray's surprise, he meets his former training partner, Lyon and learns that he is a member of Lamia Scale and part of its delegated team. Once everyone agrees on an appropriate plan of action, they all rush to find Oracion Seis.
Once they find them, Gray tries to help the team by taking on Racer and Angel, but ultimately fails like the others. After they kidnap Wendy (and Happy), Erza, who's been poisoned, asks someone to cut her arm off to stop it from spreading and eventually taking her life. Lyon volunteers to carry out her request, but Gray stops him and states that there must be another way. Charle tells them that Wendy has the power to heal her poison, and in response, Gray and Natsu team up to find and save her.
While in search of Oracion Seis' base, they encounter the Naked Mummy guild and after defeating them, they force them to give them its location. After finding the ruins where Wendy and Happy have been taken, Racer blocks their path but Gray stalls him and tells Natsu to go on ahead. Angered that Gray managed to stop him, he starts to attack him with his incredible speed, making it hard for Gray to keep up with him. Racer then taunts him and starts to initiate one of his spells, Dead Grand Prix.
After being hit several times by a hoard of charging motorcycles, Gray decides to hop onto one and the two race until they stumble upon Lyon and Sherry. Gray tells Lyon to get on, and the duo manage to knock Racer off his motorcycle but Racer manages to do the same to them. They then begin to send a series of attacks on Racer, who dodges each one.
Lyon then figures out his weaknesses and whispers it to Gray. Surprised, Lyon then freezes him and tells him to watch from afar. Once he was about to be killed by Racer, Gray unfreezes himself and sends an ice arrow at the Oracion Seis member, instantly defeating him. As they celebrate their victory, Racer walks towards them with a bomb strapped to his chest. Lyon tackles him off the cliff and gets caught in the explosion, horrifying both Gray and Sherry.
While Gray searches for Lyon, believing that he's still alive, Sherry, who has fallen into darkness as a result of Nirvana's magic, comes from behind and attacks Gray with her wooden doll, seemingly knocking him unconscious. However, when she was about to do the same to Natsu and Lucy, Gray shows up and subdues her. Lyon then shows up and Sherry, relieved that he's alive, is freed form Nirvana and returns to normal. Later, him Natsu and Lucy are caught up in the activation of Nirvana's second stage, forcing them to climb one of its legs to the top to stop it.
With Natsu and Happy flying to the top, Gray and Lucy team up and eventually find Hoteye and Jura. After encountering Midnight, Hoteye does battle with him and tells Gray and the others to leave while he holds him off. They adhere to his request, and run off only to find Natsu being dragged by Brain. Shortly after, Jura fights and defeats him, and Wendy shows up to heal Natsu's poison inflicted on him during his fight with Cobra. They then reach the top of Nirvana, but are unable to figure out how to stop it. Brain, under the disguised voice of Hoteye, tells them that to stop Nirvana they must defeat Midnight who was located at the bottom. But as they open the gate to get there, they realized it was a trap when they got caught in an explosion. Once Gray and the others wake up, they notice that they were unharmed thanks to Jura who protected them with his magic but falls unconscious from his injuries.
While tending to Jura's wounds, Gray and the others are shocked to see Klodoa, Brain's staff and the seventh member of Oracion Seis, speak and attack them. But he then suddenly starts to shiver in fear, explaining that Brain's second personality, code named Zero, will emerge now that all the member of his guild have been defeated. Soon after, Zero shows up and immediately sends an attack at an unconscious Jura. Although Gray manages to stop the attack with his ice shield, it is easily destroyed by Zero's power.
As Hibiki uses his magic to telepathically communicate with everyone, Lyon wills Gray to get back up and he moves to the second leg lacrima to destroy it. After successfully completing the job, him along with everyone else manage to bring down Nirvana. Upon their reunion, the Magic Council approaches them and arrests Hoteye and Jellal. Not willing to let them take Jellal, Gray joins Natsu and convinces the others to take him back. But Erza tells everyone to stop and permits the Council to take him away, prompting saddened looks from everyone.
Edolas Arc[]
S-Class Trial Arc[]
Once everyone returned, Gray tells the guild members about Edolas as well as their counterparts, especially Cana at whom he could barely hold in his laugh when thinking about her Edolas version. Soon after, him along with the rest of the guild get into a small skirmish which ends with him overexerting himself. Days later, he, like the other members, tries to complete as many jobs as he can to qualify as a viable candidate for the S-Class Wizard Promotion Trial. To his fortune, Makarov, who appears alongside Erza, Mirajane and Gildartz, announces him as one of eight participants of the event. As him and the others talk about the trial, Loke shows up, to Lucy's surprise, and states that he will be Gray's partner since he already made a promise to participate with him and hence temporarily cancels his contract with her during the trial.
