Goku is a character in the Dragon Ball franchise.

The main protagonist, Goku is one of the last pureblood members of the Saiyan race, sent to Earth as a baby and raised among humans. As a powerful martial artist, he defends Earth against dire threats.

Origin

Baby Kakarot (Goku) was born while his father, Bardock, and his warrior team were on a mission to conquer planet Kanassa and kill all of its inhabitants. In terms of power, Kakarot was a very weak baby, compared to the norm for the Saiyan race, so he was sent to a planet with weak inhabitants (Earth) to exterminate all life there. This was done because adult Saiyan warriors are needed for harder missions. So they use their children to exterminate their unworthy opponents.[1] Upon crashing down on Earth, a man named Gohan found Goku and tried to raise the child as his own. Along the way, Goku fell down a cliff and hit his head. This event drastically changed Goku from a fussy, violent child to a kind child. [2]

Creation

Goku was created by Akira Toriyama, who inspired by the ancient Chinese story of Journey to the West, began writing the Dragon Ball manga series, therefore the name of his main character Son Goku is a transformation of Sun Wukong, a monkey character from the Chinese story. So the readers would identify more with the manga he also changed the monkey appearance to a human but left the monkey tail. Later on Toriyama also explained that Goku's clothing was inspired by those of the Shaolin Monks in China.

Dragon Ball

Kakarot was found by an old man named Gohan in a small space pod. Gohan tried to raise the young boy, but Kakarot was extremely hostile and strong by human standards. During a trip one day, the young boy fell down a deep ravine and bashed his head. The permanent amnesia from this fall prevented the young boy from completing his initial mission. He was named Son Goku by Gohan.

Gohan was amazed at the strength, speed, and loved fighting so Gohan trained him in the ways of Martial Arts. Young Goku even had a tail which resembled a monkey's tail. This tail would allow him to turn into a huge Ape called an Oozaru at the sight of the full moon but Goku had no memories of anytime he has ever transformed and was completely unaware of this until later told by Vegeta.

After Gohan's death, Goku lived by himself for a while and later went about the world traveling with Bulma Briefs to search for the mystic Dragon Balls and met Master Roshi, the Turtle Hermit, Yamcha, the desert bandit and his shape shifting cat companion Puar, and Oolong, a shape shifting pig.

After finding all the Dragon Balls and losing their wish to Oolong, Goku decided to train with the venerable old Master Roshi. Roshi began to train Goku and Krillin in the ways of the Turtle Hermit and taught them the legendary energy blast: The Kamehameha Wave. Goku entered the World Martial Arts Tournament to only be defeated by Master Roshi's alias Jackie Chun.

After the World Martial Arts Tournament, Goku traveled around the world to find the Dragon Balls, defeating the entire Red Ribbon army in the process, a feat which was considered impressive by all of his friends.

After defeating the Red Ribbon Army and finding the last Dragon Ball (with the aid of Uranai Baba), Goku once again entered the World Martial Arts Tournament, only to lose to Tien Shinhan by a fluke, as they were both thrown into the air, and Goku technically hit the ground first, as he fell onto a moving car before Tien hit the ground.

His other great accomplishment was defeating the evil King Piccolo.

In the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai, he clashed with Piccolo Jr, defeating him in the finals and winning the tournament for the first time. After this he went off to get married with Chi-Chi and thus began life as an adult.
