As Eren charges towards the Colossal Titan, he jumps high above to dodge the Titan's arm. He realizes that the Titan swept the cannons away. Eren hoist himself around the Titan to slash at the enemy's nape. Suddenly, the Titan unleashes an enormous burst of steam. The Titan suddenly disappears. In town, the villagers hurry to evacuate. The military unleashes a barrage of cannon fire on the Titans before charging in close combat. As everyone prepares to face the Titans in the battlefield, Franz assures Hanna that he will protect her. Mikasa notices the two hugging each other and Armin who cannot get a hold of himself. Eren grabs Armin's hands and tells him that they cannot lose to the Titans. Somewhere in Wall Maria, Pixis loses to Lord Walto in a chess game. Then, a soldier arrives to inform Commander Pixis about the Titans invading the Trost District. Lord Walto rushes to persuade Commander Pixis to stay here to protect his territory. Pixis explains that men are dying out there. Lord Walto tells him to let those soldiers die, but he cannot convince the commander to leave his post.
In a debriefing, Eren and the others learn that the initial response team has been wiped out. The captain debriefs them to defend the territory with their lives. As everyone mobilizes, Jean wonders why the Titans had to attack now when he could have gone to the Interior. Nearby, Krista tries to comfort one man who vomits out of fear. Jean bumps into Eren and yells at Eren to accept death. Eren shoves Jean to the pillar and tells him that they can survive. Eren's words motivates some of the soldiers nearby. Mikasa tells Eren to come to her when things get out of control. Though Mikasa is in the rear squad. When she protests against her superior, Eren head-butts her and tells her to follow her orders. Mikasa grabs Eren's hand and tells him not to die on her. After Eren pulls his hand away, he and his squad remain on the standby in the battlefield. In a brief flashback, a biology teacher lectures them on Titans and their physiology. He instructs them on how to kill Titans. On the roof, Eren tries to cheer up Armin with thoughts of promotion to Legion.
Soaring above the roofs, Eren's squad rushes into the battlefield. The area is infested with Titans. Suddenly, a Titan jumps at Eren's squad. The Titan captures Thomas and swallows him whole. Eren rushes to attack the Titan to avenge Thomas's death. Then, a Titan grabs a bite out of Eren's leg. Armin watches his squad members get eaten by the Titans. He wonders why he cannot move. A Titan grabs Armin and drops Armin inside his mouth. In a flashback, Eren recalls Armin bringing a book about the ouside world. Armin shares about the vast oceans full of salt and water. He explains to Eren about the beauty of the outside world. Eren struggles to get up, and he jumps in the jaws of the giant. He pulls out Armin from the Titan's throat. As Eren throws out his arm, the Titan's jaw slams on Eren. Armin screams out for Eren. Meanwhile, Mikasa looks back when she notices something.
